Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)
The Swedish University for Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is the premier educational and research university focused on agriculture and forestry in Sweden. There are three main campuses. The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant physiology at Umeå is part of the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) with more than 25 group leaders, 50 doctoral and 50 post-doctoral fellows. The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology and UPSC are world leaders in molecular genomics of forest trees having contributed to Populus genome sequencing and recently heading the full genome sequencing of Norway Spruce the largest tree genome. The UPSC has state of the art greenhouses for growing transgenic trees. It also has staff to perform large scale Populus transformations and downstream analysis and cutting edge functional genomics tools ranging from metabolomics, proteomics bioinformatics.
The SLU leads WP6 in WATBIO. Rishikesh Bhalerao leads this work. He is a molecular geneticist and has more than 10 years of experience in developing and using functional genomics approaches to understand mechanisms underlying the growth and development in tree model Populus. Key candidate genes identified in WPs 1, 2 and 7 will be refined further in WP6 and transformations made for functional characterisation.
